... died five days after an Independence Day celebration at the Washington Monument (which was then under construction) at which he had consumed raw fruit and iced milk. He died of an unknown digestive ailment; several of his cabinet members suffered a similar complaint. There were persistent rumours that he had been poisoned by pro–slavery Southerners, but there is no evidence to support this claim.
